The role of a business intelligence engineer is unique and not understood by many. It is often confused with data analyst or also business analyst. Many people have asked me what do you do as a BI engineer? Why not call yourself a Power BI or Tableau developer? We will try to answer these questions and some unanswered questions in this article and in other articles to come. My approach here is to explain in language that beginners can understand.
Businesses have always relied on leaders to make smart decisions and achieve success. These decisions were the greatest responsibility of the leaders. However, managers need input to understand what is going on with the business to make these decisions. They can’t make decisions based on what their gut feels like. They have always relied on data to educate them. Over the years, managers have had to dive deep into their business data and do the math themselves or have trusted people do it for them and approach them with their options. But with the evolution of data storage, engineering solutions and new visualization tools, there is a new breed of “engineers” who still understand the business. They generate meaning from operational data supported by visuals, so managers can sit back and trust the information generated by the data. These engineers who collect data, clean it and understand its meaning, discover different results from different dimensions, write a story supporting it with simulations and present it to different audiences than business intelligence engineers.
Today’s market is so competitive at all levels that it guarantees one thing – rapid change. These rapid changes keep businesses on their toes and require them to do things differently than they did yesterday. Every day, managers are challenged to come up with ideas that will keep customers interested and invested in them. Fortunately, they have all their trading data in real time. But creating meaningful insights from this huge amount of data must also be done in near real time. With the advent of visualization tools like Tableau, Power BI, QuickSight, Looker, etc., this is also possible. But there must be someone who can do it skillfully. While a developer can produce reports quickly, managers need someone with a solid understanding of the business so they can “think like a leader” and also anticipate their questions. While both of these are important, it is also important to be able to quickly search for and retrieve data from a new source if it is not available in the data layout created by the data engineers. To do all this, they will definitely need to collaborate with various data creation teams, data engineers, product development teams, program managers and leaders. In general – they should have good people skills.

Many people ask why I can’t hire a reporting tool expert and run the reports when I get the data from them. Although this is possible, the role of BIE is more than producing reports. The BIE must work independently of the applicant and be able to solve its own problems.
If you have a team of data engineers, you can ask them to create dashboards. But a DE needs to understand the business well and be able to write stories around the data.
Why can’t TPM do this? The value of a TPM producer as a BIE must be very skilled with data and must understand how to produce efficient and accurate pipelines.
BI engineers are unique in their skills. They are not just technicians, not pure management, and not artists – but a combination of all of them
