I’ve been working with data in some capacity for about 20 years, including as a business analyst, data warehouse developer/analyst, business intelligence analyst, data engineer, and data analysis lead instructor.​

What are some examples of problems/questions that a BI Analyst might be asked to solve on the job?

The job of a business intelligence analyst varies from company to company, but the most frequently asked questions usually revolve around KPIs. How does the company work? What are the sales markers? BI analysts use a top-down approach to answer these questions. For example, let’s say my company’s sales have decreased. The BI analyst is tasked with finding out if this attrition is coming from a specific region, a specific product/service, a specific salesperson, etc.​

BI analysts typically ensure that data is available from sources and work with other roles such as database administrators and data engineers. Data analysts work more closely with customers (internal and external) to meet their data needs, as well as with BI analysts. Often these roles are actually combined. Anyone looking to get into BI must have technical and non-technical knowledge and skills. This list is not exhaustive, but highlights some that may be useful to analysts.​

You don’t need to have a technical background, but you do need to be willing to learn the technical aspects of the job. A business background is actually useful because it helps you understand business problems, understand the business itself, and generate insight into stakeholders. Asking the right questions helps you understand your business needs. Technical knowledge is helpful in this area as it gives you insight into what you can offer. Moving deeper from a data analyst role to a BI analyst role and a combination of the two roles will require additional technical skills such as SQL. For those in data-driven roles, we recommend having solid knowledge of Excel, SQL, and visualization tools such as Tableau.

How did she typically become a BI analyst before starting Bootcamp? Is Business Intelligence a set of skills that can be learned at Bootcamp?

I don’t have a data degree myself, but I learned on the job throughout my career and actually taught myself SQL. I ended up getting a master’s degree in computer information systems, but a career in business intelligence doesn’t require that. At General Assembly’s Data Analytics Bootcamp, we not only teach you the tools, we also teach you how to formulate hypotheses and engage in empirical processes. The student builds an Excel project, then a SQL project, and finally he builds a Tableau project.​

You can learn various business intelligence tools and techniques in various programs such as General Assembly and Micro Masters offered by various colleges (long-term colleges). There is also a “boot program”, but usually it takes more than a day. There is also a complete degree program in data analysis.​

Depending on your level of interest, background, financial commitment, etc., a bootcamp can be your starting point for a career in data/BI. This is a career path where we are constantly learning and acquiring new skills.​

BI analysts can work for any company, from startups to large corporations. Business intelligence teams typically reside in medium to large enterprises.​

BI works across multiple areas of a business, and it varies from organization to organization. In general, BI should provide information that helps the organization achieve its goals. For this, BI needs to collaborate with both her IT and business departments.​

Career Path For Data Analyst

I would start with a program like the General Assembly Data Analysis Course. This is a great start for this type of career path. There are other places to learn about data analytics such as Data Camp, Coursera, and Udemy. Here is a list of additional programs:
